Worcester City women are one victory from a final after overcoming league rivals Shifnal Town 2-0 in the Premier Cup quarters.

The victory at Sixways sees Worcester progress to face Coventry Sphinx in the semi-final of the West Midlands Regional Women's Football Premier League Cup thanks to a brace from Jess Fassnidge.

The match was a fierce standoff with Shifnal, who currently hold the fifth position in the league, with Worcester coming back strong after a three-week hiatus.

In the first half, Leah Ritson emerged as a key player, setting up the first goal within the opening minute by positioning the ball perfectly from Fassnidge, who dealt the opening blow by tapping the ball into the net during a scramble in the area.

Shifnal retaliated with sustained possession, but were ultimately unable to penetrate the Worcester defence, with goalkeeper Sofia Stolt heroically stopping the visitors as they broke free for a one-on-one chance.

The partnership between Ritson and Fassnidge proved steadfast, though Shifnal's physicality and tenacity presented formidable opposition.

Fassnidge ended the half the same way it began, with a second goal in the 45th minute, courtesy of an assist from Annie Sime.

Despite trailing behind, Shifnal remained assertive and almost scored off a potentially threatening cross, however Stolt once again thwarted their efforts with a timely save.

The game welcomed the return of Annie Highway from injury and the debut of two development team players: Tilly Pearson and Alice Finley.

Pearson and Finley brought renewed energy to the game, assisting Worcester in their pursuit of a third goal.

Heading towards the 88th minute, Fassnidge almost completed her hat-trick with some deft footwork, but the ball could not quite squeeze in from the post.

Shifnal made several last-minute attempts to level the game, but Stolt's steadfast goalstopping resulted in another score kept out, aptly securing her clean sheet in the process.

City will now look ahead towards their semi-final game against Coventry Sphinx at the Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena next week.
