A YOUNG city student has been wowing judges at ice skating competitions.

Amelia Gumenyuk, 12, a year seven pupil at Worcester’s Nunnery Wood High School, impressed at two contests, achieving eye-catching results.

At the Guildford Open, Amelia secured first and third places and then at the more recent Blackburn Open she bagged second and third spots.

These results are the best Amelia has achieved.

It has given Amelia the opportunity to compete at the British Qualifier with the potential chance to participate at the British Championships in December.

Amelia started ice skating aged just three when she lived in Ukraine.

She would go to the ice rink with her father to watch her older brother play ice hockey.

When Amelia and her family moved to the United Kingdom, she began skating at a rink in Malvern where she was spotted by a coach.

This quickly led to Amelia training at a rink in Coventry.

She now trains six days a week after school.

Amelia said: “I love the freedom ice skating gives me.

“I feel like I can do anything on the ice.”

As well as competing, Amelia also enjoys performing in ice shows too, most recently taking part in The Wizard of Oz.
