A FRUSTRATED councillor has met with planning officers over the future of a former nightclub site, destroyed by a fire and then demolished.

Cllr Alan Amos said he has become increasingly concerned about the old 'eyesore' Zig Zag nightclub site in St John's calling the situation 'a disgrace' and 'frustrating' for residents.

The building was destroyed by a fire in May 2007 and was demolished three years ago.

Concerns are mounting about the lack of progress although Cllr Amos believes he has now made some headway in bringing the matter to a conclusion.

We have previously reported how the site had attracted fly-tipping but had now been placed behind a heavy-duty wooden fence.

The Bedwardine city and county councillor for the Conservatives said: “Following my meeting with planning officers on Thursday, I am very pleased to announce that, at long last, well-overdue progress has been made on bringing this site back into use for retail and residential use.

"Despite a year of inaction, the applicant has now put in a Discharge of Conditions application to cover issues such as land drainage."

The Worcester News understands the application will then come before planning officers for a decision.

Cllr Amos added: "Then there will be absolutely no impediment to implementing the planning permission which he already has for the site and which he is obliged to start no later than January 2026."

Officers are now monitoring the situation and Cllr Amos says he will be requesting further updates.

He added: "If work does not proceed as required and agreed, then the council will consider legal options including the serving of a 215 Untidy Site Notice.

"This is the last chance for the developer to honour his words and get on and get the work done.

“I am delighted that so much progress has been made so quickly at my meeting with planning officers.”

A plan to flatten Zig Zag and build 12 new apartments above shop and office space was approved by Worcester City Council’s planning committee in October 2016.

We reported in February 2023 that there was no progress despite a condition in the planning decision saying that work should begin within two years due to a disagreement over section 106 money – funds the developer has to give the council for local infrastructure.

The city council said yes to a plan for the apartments after coming to a final agreement with the developer Peter Styles in early 2019.

The plan was hit by further delays with demolition halted after Mr Styles was said to have decided to sell the building before he returned with a new application.

The newest plans were to provide two shop units, five flats and three terraced houses under redrawn plans, approved by the city council.
