A dramatic society is set to perform the renowned story of an unconventional female performer who rises to fame in the early 20th century.

Evesham Operatic and Dramatic Society, known for its run of 'Calendar Girls The Musical' last November, is set to keep the ball rolling with 'Funny Girl' this coming May.

A classic tale of the struggle towards stardom, the show illustrates the life of Fanny Brice, a unique performer from New York who finds fame within early 20th century Ziegfeld Follies.

The narrative interlaces on-stage performances with off-stage drama, capturing the bustle of theatre life.

This is not your conventional show-girl tale, and Fanny's story proves that you do not need to be the conventional 'pretty girl' to shine.

Full of catchy tunes, quick retorts, and vibrant dance routines, the show offers a nostalgic trip to the golden age of American Vaudeville Theatre.

Audiences may remember iconic songs 'Don’t Rain on My Parade' and 'People' from the 1968 film popularised by Barbra Streisand.

However, it has now gained popularity with a new generation through recent revivals starring Sheridan Smith and Lea Michele.

The production will introduce theatre fans to Phoebe Smithies, a talented theatre graduate who will be taking on the leading role.

Evan Wride also returns to the society after his previous performance in 'Calendar Girls', where he will play the role of Nick Arnstein.

EODS also invites viewers to enjoy watching some their talent, featuring in the third season of BBC Studios' 'Sister Boniface Mysteries'.

The popular detective series will feature a nun chorus, compiled from EODS' 'Funny Girl' cast members, and is set to air in April on BritBox.

'Funny Girl' will take to The Henrician stage in Evesham for a five-night run from Tuesday, 14 to Saturday, May 18.

Evening performances begin at 7.30pm on each night, with a 2.30pm matinee on Saturday.

Tickets are available from www.henrician.org for £16 (£14 for concessions and groups of 8+).
