GRANDFATHER and grandson Arthur and Phil Kupfer won the Ravenmeadow and Perdiswell Park greensomes.

Playing off a team handicap of 13.6, they combined to win with 57.4 nett.

The big-hitting younger Kupfer worked well with the guile and accuracy of the elder to pull off the win by a decent margin after dropping in eight pars and four birdies on the first, second, 16th and 18th holes.

Val Williams and Jan Richardson, playing off 35.4, came home with 60.6 to take second position.

Just two pars and a birdie on the 18th was all they needed to take the place.

The last-minute entry of the pairing of Alan Gladwin and Alvin Patten brought home 61.4 playing off 25.6 for third place.

Gladwin and Patten had never played together before but, although only carding four pars, they took full advantage of their shots in hand to return a decent score.

Clive Brown and Malcolm Stanley, playing off 21.2, took fourth place with six pars and a birdie on the 18th enabling the duo to pull away from the chasing pack.

Eighteen pairings contested the competition on a warm and often breezy morning.

Sue Clissett took top spot in the ladies’ stableford after returning 40 points.

A birdie on the 10th hole proved to be the difference as 36-handicapper Clissett hauled in a card-improving five points which effectively gave her the win.  Alison Griggs (28 handicap) pushed hard over the homeward nine but eventually came up just shy after carding 39.

A shaky first nine was quickly put to one side at the turn when Griggs kicked off with a par on the 10th followed by a second on the 16th and an eagle two on the 18th.  Jane Rowland (28) took third place with 32 as too many double bogies or worse left her with too much to do.

Sali Harrison (27) took fourth place after returning 26 with just a single par on the 18th and too many dropped shots on both outward and inward halves.

For the monthly medal, the Ravenmeadow course proved to be a lot harder to negotiate than of late.

A dismal wet start and strong swirling winds proved troublesome and toughened up the competition, putting several shots on the cards of most players.

Nonetheless, Adrian Tinker (16) managed to play well under his handicap and finished with a respectable nett 63 to take the win.

Tinker, who carded eight pars and one birdie on the 18th, played well on the way out, netting a tidy 30 but then took his foot off the gas to card 33 on the way home to finish just one shot clear.

Double bogies on the 12th and 17th were his only real setbacks but, as it transpired, the damage done proved minimal.  Tinker’s playing handicap will now be down at 15.

Mick Huggins (18) put in another decent card, netting 64 to take second place with five pars and one birdie, also on the 18th.

An erratic first nine and an improved back-nine tally assured Huggins the place at the conclusion by just one clear shot and a one-shot playing handicap cut.

Barry Warner (19) returned 65 to finish third with five pars and one birdie but his four double bogies found him coming up short although he also had a one-shot handicap reduction.

Dave Hancock took fourth place after carding 66 and count-back was required to separate two tied finishers.

Hancocks’ 31 was two shots better than David Bradley.  Six pars were carded by Hancocks but a shaky front nine threatened to halt his challenge before a much smarter back nine put him back in contention.  On a physically and mentally trying day, just six of the 38 entrants netted par or better for the course.

Ravenmeadow seniors lost 5-0 at Habberley on a warm day perfect for golf as they could not match the resilient home team.

The losing Ravenmeadow pairs were Mike Ransom and Roger Savage 3&1, Doug Allen and Ron Gilbert 2&1, Fred Hackett and Mike Wilkes 2&1, Terry Palmer and Bob Gibson 5&4 and Jim Dover and Dave Johnston 5&3.

The first three games were evenly matched and could have gone either way.
