THE Worcestershire Golf Club duo David Anderson and Martin Field carried off the annual seniors’ Open Pairs competition on home soil.

More than 60 pairs from across the Midlands and South Wales took part in the event with 34 clubs represented.

The clear winners of this hotly-contested event were Anderson and Field who carded 43 Stableford points.

B Whittington and J Savage from Robin Hood eased out M Findlay and D Haggar from Ross on Wye on countback to take second place, with both pairs on 42 points.

Bromsgrove GC’s C Hughes and J Jenks took the fourth slot, ahead of B Rogers and L Dyment from WGC and Bransford, and B Sheehan and N Cooper from Neath GC. All three pairs recorded 41 points.

Course manager Steve Lloyd had provided a course in excellent condition with lightning-fast greens and tricky pin position, while the bar and restaurant were in constant use from early morning until late into the evening.

Organiser David Fawbert, was grateful to all volunteers who had provided a warm welcome to visitors and a delighted seniors’captain, Les Facer, was confident many of the players would return for next year’s event.

In club competitions, the ladies stableford saw some exceptional scoring again from newcomer Jill Brierly in her first year at The Worcestershire.

Brierly finished six points clear of her nearest rival, Pat Rose, with 40 points.

This was her second score of five under par in the last four ladies competitions and her handicap has reduced to 28.

Rose’s 34 points allowed her to retain her hold on the Grannies’ Cup, which she won last year. Jenny Nions, Jen Bishop, Davina Taylor, Ursula Pearson and Chris Urry all carded 32 points.
