SIR – I’ve been truly amazed at the success of Team GB at the Rio Olympics, but one thing has bothered me.
With very few exceptions no one seems to know that there is a right way and a wrong way to fly the Union Jack. Nine times out of 10 it’s being flown upside down.
Most people seem to think that our flag is symmetrical in design, but it isn’t. I find this rather strange not to say annoying. You don’t see the Germans flying their flag with the black bar at the bottom instead of at the top. So why is it that we British don’t know which way up our flag should fly?
If you Google for images of the flag of GB you’ll see that the white diagonal strip starting at the bottom left is not equal in width. The widest white bar should be at the top.
We’re told we are the world’s fifth largest economy and yet we don’t know which way our flag should be flown.
