CANDLES may pose a risk to life warn fire safety experts as they seek to snuff out potential dangers this winter.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is issuing a warning to mark 'Candle Fire Safety Week' (November 23 to November 29).

Candle fires result in around 350 casualties in England each year.

Nearly 40 per cent of all fires nationally started by candles result in a death or injury.

People are advised to make sure they have a working smoke alarm and keep the candles away from flammable materials like curtains.

They are also advised to make sure candles are put out when they leave the room even for a moment.

Candles should be put out with a snuffer or a spoon as sparks can fly if you blow them out.

An escape route should also be planned in advance.

Station Commander Alan Haley said: "Candles are a typical sight in many homes, scenting our rooms and giving an atmospheric glow to cold winter nights. "But it’s important to remember that a candle is not just a decorative feature. "Left unattended, an open flame scenting your home could leave a trail of devastation."
